What can I expect on my first visit?
Your first appointment includes a detailed health history, a thorough physical assessment, and a discussion of our findings. In most cases, you’ll also receive treatment during your first visit, provided it is safe and appropriate to do so. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your condition and a personalized treatment plan designed to help you achieve your goals.
Do I have to get an adjustment? Does it hurt?
Not at all! While spinal adjustments can be very effective, they are only one of many treatment options chiropractors use.
Your initial examination helps determine which treatments are safest and most appropriate for you. Certain medical conditions may make spinal manipulation inappropriate, and your chiropractor will always choose the approach that best fits your individual needs.
Treatment may include:
- Spinal or joint adjustments
- Joint mobilizations (gentle movements used to improve mobility)
- Activator instrument-assisted adjustments
- Soft tissue therapy
- Medical acupuncture
- Cupping therapy
- Instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy (IASTM)
- Personalized exercise and rehabilitation
- Kinesio-Taping
Most people do not find adjustments painful. Some may experience mild soreness afterward, similar to what you might feel after a workout, which typically settles within 24 hours.
Research consistently shows that the best outcomes often come from combining hands-on treatment with education and exercise.
What is that “cracking” or “popping” sound?
Many joints in your body contain a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid, which helps them move smoothly.
During an adjustment, the joint separates ever so slightly, creating a rapid change in pressure within the fluid. This causes a tiny gas bubble to form, producing the familiar “pop” or “crack” sound. This normal process is called joint cavitation.
Think of it like pulling a suction cup off a smooth surface. The sound comes from a quick change in pressure, not from bones rubbing together.
Is it true that once I see a chiropractor, I have to keep coming forever?
Absolutely not!
Our goal is to help you recover and give you the tools to stay well, not to keep you coming indefinitely.
Once you’re feeling better, many patients simply return if another injury or flare-up occurs. Others choose occasional maintenance visits to help manage recurring aches and stiffness or maintain their mobility. Whether maintenance care is appropriate depends on your goals, lifestyle, and history of recurring pain.
We’ll work together to create a treatment plan that fits your needs and adjust it as your condition improves.
How long will it take to feel better?
Every person and every injury is different, so recovery time can vary.
Many patients notice some improvement after their first treatment, while others may require several visits before significant changes occur. Factors such as the type of injury, how long you’ve had it, your overall health, and your activity level all influence recovery.
Early in the healing process, treatment is often recommended more frequently before gradually spacing visits farther apart as your symptoms improve. Just like medication, the “dosage” of treatment changes as your body heals.
Our goal is always to help you recover as efficiently as possible while giving you the knowledge and exercises needed to stay active and reduce the chance of future problems.
Do I need a referral from my family doctor to see a chiropractor?
Nope! In Ontario, chiropractors are regulated primary healthcare professionals licensed by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario (CCO), which means you can book an appointment directly, no referral is needed.
Do you offer direct billing?
Yes! We offer direct billing to many major insurance companies.
Coverage varies depending on your individual insurance plan, so we recommend checking your benefits. You are responsible for any remaining balance, including deductibles, co-payments, or amounts not covered by your insurance.
Do you accept WSIB claims?
Yes, we accept WSIB claims. Please ensure you tell your chiropractor that you’ve had a workplace related accident or injury.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, Debit, and e-transfers.
What is medical acupuncture?
Medical acupuncture is an evidence-based treatment that uses thin, sterile needles to stimulate muscles and other tissues. It can help reduce pain, improve mobility, decrease muscle tension, and support the body’s natural healing process for a variety of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
What is cupping?
Cupping therapy is a technique that uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying tissues. It may help reduce muscle tension, improve mobility, increase local blood flow, and provide short-term pain relief. Cupping is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan when appropriate.
What is Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)?
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a hands-on technique that uses specially designed stainless steel instruments to assess and treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. The instruments allow your chiropractor to target areas of tension or tissue restriction more precisely than using hands alone. IASTM may help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery when combined with movement, exercise, and other treatments.
